Azure Maps vs Bing Maps RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi there,

are Azure maps and Bing maps the same thing? Do they run the same engine? Do they produce the same outcomes?

I made some tests and although they seem alike, the places search at Azure maps return significantly less valid outcomes than Bing maps.

    Thanks in advance.

  • You are comparing the Azure Maps API to the Bing Maps website which is not a fair comparison. The Bing Maps website uses a lot of additional data sources which they do not/cannot expose through their APIs. IF you compare the API's themselves you will find that the POI data in Azure Maps tends to be much richer.

Also looks like you may have some implementation issues with how you are using the autosuggest service in Azure Maps.

  • They are two separate products, built on different platforms (one on Azure the other on Bing's infrastructure). They used different data sets; Azure Maps primarily uses TomTom data which Bing Maps primarily uses HERE Maps data. As such, the results from each service is different.

  • Can you send some details around the type of searches you are performing so that we can investigate the differences. For POI data Azure Maps should be fairly close to Bing Maps in terms of coverage, if not have more coverage.

  • Hi Ricky,

Although the map info are quite similar the places search is significant worst at Azure maps.

At the Maps below Bing always return a result at the following searches but Azure maps does not.

I have tried the searches both in English and Greek since the location is in Greece.

    Searches:

    1) Nikanoros or Νικάνορος

    2) Pelopidou or Πελοπίδα

    3) Leonidou or Λεωνίδου
