  • I'm assuming this is for Windows 8.1? because I don't think the same problem exists for 7 or 10.

How to enable .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows 8

    Windows 8.1 Enterprise (download)

Installing Windows 8.1 From A USB Key

You must have installation media for Windows 8 (could be a DVD or even a mounted .ISO with a Windows 8 installation) and make sure the media is for the correct version of Windows (x32 or x64). Otherwise, the command line will fail (not harmful, just annoying):

    • Run a command prompt (cmd) with elevated rights ('as Administrator').
    • Run the following command:
    dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFX3 /All /Source:E:\sources\sxs /LimitAccess

where "E:\sources\sxs" is the sxs path of your Windows 8 installation media.

    Enter image description here

    • That's it, .NET 3.5 is installed on your machine. Reboot and everything that requires .NET 3.5 will work.

  • Dear Frank,

Thank you for posting in the MSDN forum.

What’s your OS version and please tell us more information about the failed installation. It will help us to analysis the cause of this issue.

If your OS is Windows8 or higher, there have some workarounds which may be helpful for you. The .NET Framework 3.5 is not automatically installed with Win8, Win8.1 or Win10 and must be separately enabled to run applications that depend on it. We can use the following methods to install it.

    Useful documents:

    Solutions in online mode:

    1. Install the .NET Framework 3.5 on Demand

If an application requires the .NET Framework 3.5 and cannot find the version on your computer, it displays the following message box and you should choose Install this feature to enable the .NET Framework 3.5.

    2. Enable the .NET Framework 3.5 in Control Panel

Go to Control PanelàTurn Windows features on or off, it brings up the Turn Windows features on or off dialog box, and select .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) and click OK. After this step, it will download the entire package from internet and install the .NET Framework 3.5 feature.

    3. Download the .NET Framework 3.5 installer

The download link of the .NET Framework 3.5 installer:

    Solution in offline mode:

    1. Insert Windows 8 DVD or mount ISO image. The source of this feature can be found in folder E:\sources\sxs (In this case E: the user’s drive letter on which the user has loaded Windows 8 Media.)

    2. Open cmd.exe with administrator

    3. Run the following command Dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFX3 /All /Source:E:\sources\sxs /LimitAccess, and hit Enter. After completing the installation of .NET Framework 3.5 you can see that the feature is enabled.

    Thanks and best regards,
