Is it safe to update WDK 8 on my Windows 7 x64 system? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Dear all,

I am thinking about installing WDK 8 on my Windows 7 64-bit system to develop Win 8 KDMF driver. But I am just wondering if I will run into any problem with my previously installed WDK 7.1. Because I need to support also some XP OS driver so I need this WDK 7.1 to be untouched.

When I try to run the setup for WDK 8, it prompts for update or create new folder for this WDK 8 version. What should I select if I need both version of the WDK? Do I create a new folder which the VS2012 will use or if I just upgrade then will I be able to build my XP driver again?

    Thanks for any help.

  • They run side by side just fine.  In fact I have a system with multiple WDK's going back to Windows XP days since I have clients who want a specific WDK.

For the install if you install VS2012 first it will not give you the option to choose the location.  I just create a directory for each WDK with a useful descriptive name.  If you install the Win8 WDK before VS2012 besure to repair the install after VS2012 is installed so that everything is properly linked.  Note: also install the Win8 SDK there are files if you are moving from the Win7 WDK that now are found in the SDK.

  • Hi Don,

I already has everything running with VS2012 and WDK 7.1 installed. When I try to install WDK 8 then the specify location dialog screen is displayed and I have the option to (1) "install new or updated features in the Window Driver Kit on this computer" or (2) "Download the Window Driver Kit on a separate computer". I don't know if I select option (1) then my WDK 7.1 will be overwritten or not?

  • Using option 1 should work fine.
