link a document in sharepoint to source document RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is it possible to connect a document in a library to another source document.

Situation: we have a technical document which we want to describe in a procedure document. If both documents are done i want to connect them to each other as that when the technical document is changed the procedure document automatically 'becomes outdated' and a workflow or alert should be sent to the owner of the document that the original source document is updated and he needs to review the changes and apply them to the procedure document if applicable and re-save to the library.

  • You can't connect the two as par as I know, but this is possible within SharePoint between libraries.

All I can suggest is using the "Link to a Document" content type (or a copy of it, with any additional metadata that you need) and try using the UNC / filepath.

Edit: Or, additionally, a Page Capture web-part may work but I've yet to test this.
