Visual C++ 6 compatibility RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi everyone:

I've been able to glean from posts in this forum that Visual C++ 6 works with Vista. Is it officially supported? What about 64-bit Vista?

    Thanks for any answers,

    SA.

  • Various sites indicate that VC++6 is officially *not* supported.

However, according to some people, simply "Run as Admin" VC++ makes it working perfectly.
(the main difference between XP and Vista is that, by default, applications in Vista run with low privilege - "run as admin" [checkbox in the shortcut] gives the application admin rights (depending on who's currently logged on... admin or no))

There is something else you may want to consider: application built with recent compilers get an embedded signature providing more "trust" to Vista when it runs  (i.e and less clicks for the user). Anyway, there are ways to sign your application (Google that) even though it is created with VC++ 6.

By the way, I tried Visual C++ 6 on my Vista and it works perfect.
