Are you running on the Windows Developer Preview with developers tools or are you adding Visual Studio to a preview image without tools? The former is required to build and run Metro style apps (see http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/toolsforwinapps/thread/12057f17-2f6c-422e-836e-47bcb1656a5d )/

It was a bad install.
