RFT Fields used by Outlook RRS feed

  • Question

  • We need to know the different scenarios where RTF fields are used in an RTF message (in the message body or in the subject field).

Some of the scenarios we identified are:

    - AutoCorrect functionality (when replaces smileys and arrows)

    - AutoFormat as You Type functionality (similar to previous)

    - copying content from MS Word that has fields in it into an RTF message

    - developers including fields in a mail template???

We understand that Outlook does not give an option to the user to insert Fields. <g class="gr_ gr_28 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep" data-gr-id="28" id="28">AutoCorrect list</g> can be expanded but with plain text only. QuickParts does not support Fields.

Are there any other scenarios where fields are inserted into an RTF message? Would in any of these scenarios be the field result not up to date or not complete?

We are working with an RTF reader and trying to make sure that we are catering for all the different scenarios.

    Many thanks

  • Hi Bozz,

As this is not an Exchange related issue, but an outlook development issue, I will move this thread to outlook developers forum, they should have more professional knowledge on it and you may get effective solution timely.

    Thanks for your understanding.

  • Hi Bozz1980,

What do you mean RTF fields? Do you mean the filed like Word fields?

Outlook's message box is indeed a word editor. Although outlook dose not provide the UI interface to insert field in it, it could work with Word fields. You could insert a field into the outlook mail body via pasting fields which are copied from word document or use Word API to insert field in the Outlook mail body.

    Best Regards,

    Terry

  • Hi Terry,

RTF is a standard format and Outlook supports the RTF format for messages. In fact, the Office AutoCorrect feature uses RTF SYMBOL field instructions to reaplace for example the :) characters into a Windginds smiley.

My question was related to built-in Outlook features where Outlook would use similar Field instructions within messages behind the scenes.

Fields can be copied over from Word but context is pretty much lost in Outlook once the field is copied. For example, if I copy a last saved date field into Outlook, a field update in outlook will result in a blank date.

Are there any other scenarios where Outlook uses Fields behind the scenes?

    Many thanks
