  • These are the steps I followed when i did the migration.

step 1.  download upgrade advisor tool and run against your 2000 box to identify any potential poblem

     http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=16978

Step 2: once all the issues is being fixed, install the new sql 2008  instance

Step 3: restore all user database on the 2008 instance

step 4: transfer login  to the 2008 instance

     http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918992

Step 4: transfer SQL Agent job

Scrip it from SQL 2000 box and run it on 2008

Step 5. copy ALERTS,OPERATORS, configure liked servers ect

step 6. transfer all user defined error message

Step 7: update stats on all user DB's

Step 8: run sp_change_users_login @Action='report' to Lists the users and corresponding security identifiers (SID) in the current database that are not linked to any login. fixit

Step 9: server level configuration like, max/min memory setting, max degree of parallelism etc..
