Lease on database backups in Azure Storage

    Question

  • I'm using the

    Microsoft® SQL Server® Backup to Microsoft Azure®Tool"

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40740 to compress and send my SQL Server nightly .bak files from Amazon EC2 to Azure storage. Works great so far. However, when I go into Azure Storage and attempt to delete old backups it says they have a lease and cannot be deleted. I've googled around and found references to this problem and how to fix it via powershell. My questions -

Why are there leases on these files?

Is this going to happen for every backup file in the future?

    Am I not setup correctly?

Did I choose some wrong setting?

How can I delete these without going thru the pain of a bunch of command line scripting?

Seems like a nice simple tool but not worth it if I have to constantly waste time with a complex process just to delete old files.

    Thanks
