Oracle with entity framework RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I know there is a support for oracle in EDM. But, just want to know is there any difference if the Oracle database resides in a Unix server rather than windows.

Also it would be great if somebody can point out any know issue for using Oracle (11g) with entity framework.

  • Hi,

I don't see why it wouldn't work (of course I assume you meant the client is Windows and the server is Unix). AFAIK even when the server is Windows EF doesn't have to know that. It just uses the network level layer to discuss with the database server and likely doesn't even know wether it runs under Windows. EF itself deals with SQL statements so if it uses the same SQL statements I don't see what you could go wrong.

    From http://www.oracle.com/us/products/tools/faq-093106.html :

Q: Can ODP.NET work with Oracle8, Oracle8                                             i, Oracle9                                             i, and Oracle10                                             g database (DB) servers? Can these DB servers be on Linux or Unix?

A: Yes and yes. Oracle clients can support older and newer versions of the Oracle database. Consult the                                           Oracle on Windows FAQ for more information.

Oracle clients on Windows can work with Oracle database servers on any platform.

and according to http://download.oracle.com/oll/obe/EntityFrameworkOBE/EntityFrameworkOBE.htm it seems that Entity Framework, works over ODP.NET...

I doubt the EF is going to work on Linux using Oracle. EF doesn't even
work with a MS SQL Server previous to the 2005 version.
