.NET 3.0/3.5 install error RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm trying to install VS 2008 but the .net 3.5 framework install fails. I've tried installing .net 3.5 on it's own but it fails. It produces this error Message:

So in trying to be clever I unistalled .net 3.0. Now I can't re-install .net 3.0. This is the error message I get when I try that.

[11/21/07,09:21:25] Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0: [2] Error: Installation failed for component Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. MSI returned error code 1603

I am assuming there is a problem with my machine since it's two different installs fail. I'm Running XP Pro SP2 with the latest windows updates, .net 1.1, .net 2 Sp1. I haven't installed VS 2008 beta or .net 3.5 beta on this machine. I've also tried installing .net 3.0 through windows update but that fails as well.

I've tried what was suggested at this blog http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/08/01/446328.aspx ,but it hasn't helped me either.

Hopefully someone can help me out there, thanks.

  • Although there are  not too many details regarding the .net 3.0 installation in the log, i suspect this to be a issue with IIS server if it is installed on the machine, can you uninstall it temporarily and then try the installation using the full download package from here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=10CC340B-F857-4A14-83F5-25634C3BF043&displaylang=en . In the link scroll to the end and find the link X86 Redist Package  and click to download the entire package to the machine.

Also disable any antvirsu on the machine temporarily to try the installation.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Gary,

Did this post solve your problem?  If it didn't, you could send us the logs so that we can see the problem specifically.  The easiest is to use the log collection tool from Aaron Stebner's weblog http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2007/11/21/6458047.aspx and then send the resulting vslogs.cab file to me via email (ndoty at microsoft dot com).

    Hope this helps,

  • I also am having installation problems and tried the fix as suggested above.  I got an error during installation about Just-in-Time debugging.  Here is my error log:

[12/23/07,15:25:39] Windows Communication Foundation: [2] Error: Installation failed for component Windows Communication Foundation. MSI returned error code 1603
[12/23/07,15:25:47] WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Windows Communication Foundation is not installed.
[12/23/07,15:25:47] WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 was not attempted to be installed.
[12/24/07,16:32:39] Windows Communication Foundation: [2] Error: Installation failed for component Windows Communication Foundation. MSI returned error code 1603
[12/24/07,16:32:50] WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Windows Communication Foundation is not installed.

  • Hi JP,

Are you seeing a dialog box error message during the installation?  If so, can you post all the detailed text of that error dialog?  That will help us diagnose the problem more than the generic 1603 error in the error log.

You can also post the text of the most recent dd_wcf_retCA*.txt file in your %temp% directory, which should also give us useful detail.

    Thanks,

  • I don't have IIS service on my Windows XP Pro (SP2) machine.
But the 1603 error still occurs while i was installing the Visual Studio 2008.

I've gathered the vslogs.cab according to Aaron Stebner's WebLog.
If you need this file for debugging, please tell me where to send it.

    Thanks,
    HsuCheng

    Hi Hsu-Cheng,

If you're able to find the likely error in the log files you collected yourself, you're welcome to post it in a new thread on this forum.  Otherwise (as I mentioned above) you can email the vslogs.cab file to me at ndoty at microsoft dot com.

    Thanks,

  • I had the same problem, but uninstalling Net 2.0 and then installing 3.0 (and then popping to Windows Update to get sp1 for both) seemed to fix it.
