A2013, Short Text | Long Text | Rich Text, Differences and why you can only see Rich Text as Choice through Click to Add RRS feed

  • Question

  • Looking for a clear definition for the new fields

    1. Short Text
    2. Long Text
    3. Rich Text

    My old understanding is

    1. Short Text - Up to 255 characters with no formatting
    2. Long Text - New name for Memo Field allows something 65,000 characters and html formatting and other formats
    3. Rich Text - Not to be confused with Rich Text Format and used to be a choice when selecting text fields as format Plain Text or Rich Text.

    Generic defs at best but seems a little different now.

    Also wondering why in Design view of a Table the Rich Text does not show as a choice like Short and Long as opposed to when using the Click to Add (see image below) and what does this do different now if anything?

    Thanks for your time!!!

  • Chris,

    Answer is here:

    Discontinued features and modified functionality in Access 2013 (Text and Memo data types)

    Rich Text = long Text + (setting FormatText: Formatted Text)

    MS has made possible to add a column with formatting becouse is LongText with one setting, in Design view, you can do it without a problem

    PrtScreen (Polish Access)

    Translate:

    Typ Danych (ColName) -> DataType

    Długi Tekst -> Long Text

    Format Tekstu -> TextFormat

    Combo values: zwykły tekst -> Plain tekst

    Tekst sformatowany Formated Text.

    To Create rtf in designview:

    1. set long tex as datatype

    2. set Text Format as formated text in field option

  • Thanks Michał!

    So Short Text is the same as Text in Desktop with a 255 character limit but in an App the limit is default to 255 but can be raised to 4000 characters.

    Long Text can now contain up to a Gig in Access 2013 and in an App 2^30-1 bytes

    Rich Text is only available in Desktop version not App. The data contained is HTML encoded for Desktop only.

    I still don't see how in design view you can set the Long Text Format to Rich Text. Only in Datasheet view you can click the add field in the Table or in the Ribbon as far as I can see.

  • Of course!

    The top line is Format and the choices are empty. I did not look carefully enough at the Text Format line.

    Thank you Michał!
