Hand crafted ADO.NET datasets vs wizard driven Data Sources RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been self coding my own ADO.NET data access (through a DAL - data access layer) in my Windows app projects and enjoying such features as Transaction support, database messages, hierarchical tables, etc..

But now I am adventuring into web development using Visual Web Developer 2008.

Should I abandon my beloved ADO.NET (that I have worked so hard for) in favor of the wizard driven Data Sources with their strongly typed data sets?

Are strongly typed datasets really worth it?

    Thanks,

  • Hi Bob,

The strongly typed dataset goo (dataset designer, wizards) is designed to save your developement time, I would only use hand craft if I have to. Also these dataset designer, wizards tools are just tools for ADO.Net, so when you use them, you are still using the ADO.Net technology, just in an agile way.

On the otherhand, there is partial class support in Visual Studio. You can also add your own code on top of the strongly typed dataset. Probably this is the place that make your skill shine. Hope this would make you feel better.

    Thanks!
