  • I would like to estimate the vertical/horizontal extent of objects captured by the Kinect's depth sensor.

    Do the viewing angles of 43 degrees vertical and 57 degrees horizontal (as mentioned in the Programming Guide, p. 11), apply to both the color camera and the depth camera?

    Is the distribution of depth stream pixels uniform across the viewing field?

    Computing the size of a 90x76 pixels area in the 320x240 depth image, at a distance of 1124 mm from the Kinect sensor, I get a good estimate of the horizontal component (within 2-3 mm), but my estimate of the vertical component is off by 30 mm (too small).

  • Maybe SkeletonEngine.DepthImageToSkeleton method will solve your problem? This method is precisely intended to map from depth image pixels {pixelX, pixelY, depth in millimeters} into real-word coordinates {x,y,z} in meters.
