SQL 2016 Database on Windows 2016 Server -Page File Requirements RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are working on an remediation project to move SQL 2008R2 databases to SQL2016 and it is an side by side approach with Windows 2016 server built for us to move the DB.

Existing Windows server 2008 servers have dedicated Page file disk assigned, coming to windows 2016 the server team says that on VM machine the page file is system reserved and managed and we do not need an dedicated disk for Page file.

Just wished to know from SQL database perspective is it an best practice to request an page file disk dedicated for DB seated on Windows 2012 \2016 for SQL2016 DB  , if it is indeed does Microsoft has any links or technical documentation on this necessity /best practice

    Regards

  • Hello Eben,

SQL Server utilize the Windows page file very less, for paging out data it utilize the System database TempDB, where you should take more care about then page file.

    See tempdb Database
