SharePoint Designer - Send email when a date is entered in date field

  • I'm probably missing something obvious, but this is driving me crazy. I have a several workflow functions I need for one list.... starting with an email going to a reviewer when a new item is submitted... then basically there are about 5 date fields, and when a date is entered in the field, and email goes out. So, by default the date fields are all empty, and as the dates are entered, the requestor will get an email. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to add that functionality to a workflow. I'm kind of a newbie, I know how to send an email when a new item is submitted, and a few other basic steps, but having an email sent when a field is populated isn't something I've ever done. Hopefully I've explained what I'm trying to do well enough, I can't find anything searching the internet!

  • Hello, you cannot achieve this if you are using SharePoint Designer workflows, this is a case of Event reciever which can be written using Event reciever when an item is added and you check whether a particular column has valeu.

If you are in on premise farm you and can develop Add-ins then you can write Remote Event recievers

or you can go for a full trust code solution and write event reciever

If you are using SharePoint Online maybe you can try Microsoft Flow

If you still want to use SP Designer worklfow there is one way but I will not recommend it, you can write a workflow which runs everytime there is a change in item and check if there is a value in date field if yes send an email and set a flag which is dummy column not visible to end users so that you don't send email next time when workflow runs as you don't know if value has been added this time or last time.

  • Hi

you need to use a condition if "empty" and inside that condition insert the send email step

Please check ho to set the condition
