Table Data Type "geography" not available RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I'm trying to set up a database with SQL express 2012. I have SQL server management downloaded and everything seems to be going smoothly except I don't have the "geography" data type listed when I try to make a table. I'm using the database for a mapping application and need to use "geography". All other data types I need are included except for this one. Everything I've seen says it is supposed to be standard but I'm obviously overlooking something. Thanks in advance.

  • You are correct. It looks like I have . I believe sql 2005 was installed on my comp for some work applications that are unrelated to this project.  I thought I downloaded sql server 2012 express as a stand-alone installation because I was worried about potential compatibility issues if I upgraded 2005.

I've tried to figure out how to connect the SSMS to the sql server 2012 express but I can't figure out how to verify it's installed or how to connect to it. Any ideas on the to go about this?

    Thanks.

    Yep

Go to start -> programs -> Sql server 2012 and see if you've sqlserver configuration manager listed. If yes launch and check if you can see SQLServer service for 2012 listed and is in running state.

The config manager will look like below

  • I think you are using desktop tool (SSMS) for SQL 2012 but database you're connecting to may be an earlier version. Can you check and see what result this gives?

    SELECT @@VERSION
geography is available only from sql 2008 onwards

Which tool and which Version of the tool are you using?

The most "designer" are a little bit buggy, it's always better to use plain T-SQL Statements to create tables and other objects.

  • Thanks. I think everything is sorted out now. I'm now connected to the correct server (I think...) and have the geography data type available. I appreciate the help.
