Trial version will not run on Vista Ultimate (Joe Turney) - 1/5/2008 9:35 AM PST RRS feed

I've installed the Expression Blend trial version on my PC but it will not
run. When I choose Expression Blend from the start menu I instantly get a
message that says the program has stopped running.

"Expression Blend has stopped working. Debug or Close Program"

When I choose to close the program it sends information to Microsoft but
doesn't give me any specifics on the error message.

    How can I fix this?

    Hi Joe,

Did you recently upgrade to Vista Ultimate?

Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling the Blend trial?

At startup time, Blend looks at the licensing store to determine how much
time you have on the trial. If that store got into a corrupted state, then
    Blend could crash.

    Regards,

    Hi Adam,

Vista came installed on this computer from Dell so it hasn't been upgraded.

I did try un-installing and re-installing Blend but it made not difference.
I also tried installing the update patch but it made no difference.

However, it did start working after I installed Visual Studio 2008.

I have to assume the .net framework was an issue but I'm not sure why the
Blend installation didn't take care of it..

    Thanks for the reply,
    Joe

Joe - see my post above "Blend 2 Preview Crashes upon creating new Project".

I am running Ultimate as well. Interesting... I am going to install it on a
system running Vista Professional tonight to see if it is in fact Ultimate or
a bigger issue. I'll let you know.

Got the confirmation for you. I installed the December Preview on a Vista
Ultimate Laptop about 30 minutes ago and it works fine.

I have another syste that crashes out the same way yours does. It appears my
other systems problem has something to do with a Visual Studio 2008 Beta
install or a .NET 3.5 Beta install or corrupted build of the
redistributables... I have not gotten a clear answer on it.

so in short, it works on ultimate if the install is clean of all variables.
Time to reformat and install from scratch on my main system. egads. -Chris

Joe, which version of Blend are you trying to install? Blend v1 Trial, or
    the Blend v2 Dec Preview?

There is a problem with prerelease versions of VS 2008, and both the v1
Trial and the v2 Dec Preview work only with the RTM version of 3.0 and 3.5
    frameworks.

Blend does not install the framework, but does a check at install time to
insure that a version later than the minimum required is installed on the
    machine.

I can imagine a scenario wiht the v1 Trial where you've installed a
prerelease version of the 3.5 framework. Because the framework is reporting
a version later than 3.0, it would allow it to install, but given the pre
release nature of the 3.5 framework, Blend crashes.

The v2 Dec Preview should not allow you to install on something that is a
pre-release of 3.5, but there have been reported instances that folks have
not successfully removed pre-release versions of VS from their machine, and
so the framework is in a bad state.

    Regards,

    Adam

I'm having the same problem with Blend 2 Dec on Windows Vista Ultimate. I
installed the trial version of Visual Studio 2008, the Siverlight 1.1 alpha
SDK and 1.1 Silverlight. So far Visual Studio works fine but Blend crashes.
I have Visual Studio 2005 and I had bought some MPF books and was playing
around with Presentation Foundation programs. I'm also wondering if there
is an easy way to fix this?

I decided to give up on the December Blend and I uninstalled it and got the
latest Expression Studio from the Partners Action Pack. Now Expression Blend
works fine but I don't think it supports Silverlight which is what I wanted.
I'm OK with waiting till Expression Blend RTM version supports Silverlight.

I can't use Visual Studio 2008 designer. I get the following error:
Remoting cannot find field 'originalFontName' on type 'System.Drawing.Font'.
I downloaded and ran NetFx35_detect_issues and got the following errors.

ERROR: NetFx2.0 SP1 is not installed

ERROR: Netfx3.0 SP1 is not installed

I will try to install the above and see if that helps.
