Sql Server 2008 R2 - dtexec Large CPU Usage RRS feed

  • Question

  • Issue:  Whether executing from task scheduler or dos prompt, dtexec launches package with no work and spikes CPU to 20%. Running 4 packages results in 80% usage, etc.

Machine:  3.21 GHz, (4 processors), 8 GB RAM, 32-bit OS Windows Server Standard.

Package Desc: Foreach File Enumerator --> if file found, parse file name and call sproc to insert into table where each column corresponds to delimited fields in filename, move processed file to backup dir.

Comments: I could understand the CPU high usage when I drop 10k files. However, by no work I mean there are 0 files in the target directory so the container/package simple starts and exits.

Is there a recommended package execution option over calling dtexec.  I have called from DOS, task scheduler, sql job.  Next I deployed the package to SQL Server and created a job to execute.  The job simply calls dtexec in the background, resulting in CPU of ~19, no better than calling dtexec manually.

    Please advise.
