Folder permissions RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I am aware of the rsscripter tool to help transfer rdl's from and existing SSRS server to another, but we have 00s of folders in the current environment that don't retain the folder permissions when moved. Does anyone know how this can be accomplished? We cant move the DB and upgrade so suggestions most welcome.

    Regards

  • How can I transfer over the folder permissions in SSRS that I have created in the web console to the new SSRS server?

    Many Thanks

  • Hi Geraint,

If you want to transfer the entire security to a new server, you'll need to do a backup and restore of the ReportServer database. Please note that doing this would cause the new server to loose all its existing content/security/users and will be replaced by the content/security/users of the server you are moving form. More details here - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms156421.aspx

But if you just want to transfer folder security, you'll have to manually create it on the new server.

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi,

    Thanks for the information

We have hundreds of folders with all kinds of permissions from AD groups etc.

There must be a way in migrating these? I have been playing with RSSscripting what can transfer RDLs, folders etc but dosnt retain the permissions. I dont want to have to recrete all these folders on the new server.

We can only migrate and upgrade.

Please advice if I can transfer the folder with the permissions without recreate.

    Thanks

    Geraint

  • Thanks Syed! Do you know if this will also transfer the folder permissions? The RS utility can transfer the folders but it dosnt carry across the folder permissions and they just inherit the standard permissions from the new parent.

  • Hi Geraint,

    Thanks for your posting.

For your concern about transferring report server item-level permission settings via rs Utility, I am afraid that this cannot be done by using a Reporting Services script file. However, we can set the item-level permissions for the target report server by running rs script files. Here is a script sample that is used to set item-level permissions:
    Script Samples (Reporting Services)

Besides, you can also refer to the following thread for more information about item-level rs script:

    Hope this helps.
