Is it possible to create VMs by accessing someone's storage to get vhd images directly? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am seeking a method to create a VM without uploading VHD images, and from someone's blob.

The following Powershell is to create a VM from VHDs uploaded to my blob.
    $sourceUri = (https://storageaccount.blob.core.windows.net/vhdcontainer/osdisk.vhd)
    $osDiskName = 'myOsDisk'
    $osDisk = New-AzureRmDisk -DiskName $osDiskName -Disk `
        (New-AzureRmDiskConfig -AccountType Standard_LRS  `
        -Location $location -CreateOption Import `
        -SourceUri $sourceUri) `
        -ResourceGroupName $destinationResourceGroup
    [ref] https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-machines/windows/create-vm-specialized

I wonder if the $sourceUri can be someone's blob.

  • Yes, you can create a VM from another blob uploaded by someone else. However, could you ensure that you have all required access to the subscription, where the blob is available.
