Internet explorer 32bit vs. 64bit

    Question

  • On my Windows 7 64 bit I have two versions of Internet Explorer 9:

    • Internet Explorer 32bit
      • Path: %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
      • User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/5.0)
    • Internet Explorer 64bit
      • User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0; Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; Trident/5.0)
      • Path: %ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

On the desktop of my Windows Developer Preview 64 bit I have two versions of Internet Explorer 10:

    • Internet Explorer 32bit
      • Path: %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
      • User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 10.0; Windows NT 6.2; WOW64; Trident/6.0)
    • Internet Explorer 64bit
      • User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 10.0; Windows NT 6.2; WOW64; Trident/6.0)
      • Path: %ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

No matter what Internet Explorer executable I launch, it seem to always be the 32bit version.

On Metro Internet explorer has another user agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 10.0; Windows NT 6.2; Win64; x64; Trident/6.0).

    What does all that mean?

  • Paulo Morgado,

The reason that you are seeing the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer when you launch the 64-bit version is because you have to use the Security tab to set “Enable 64-bit mode” to cause Internet Explorer 10 to automatically start as a 64-bit process, this setting is per Security Zone.

I hope this answers your question, please post your results.

    Thanks,
