Best tools to use? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I want to play an MP3 file at a specific time on a web page when someone pushes a button on the page.  What would be the best tool(s) to accomplish this?  Does the capability already exist somewhere, or would I have to code it?  I have Expression Web 2 and Visual Studio 2005.  I may even have Silverlight on this machine (Vista).  Thank you.

  • Hello (is it Mrs?) Peale,

Silverlight is a browser plug-in, that the client can choose to load onto their computer, in order to take advantage of a Silverlight enhanced user experience.  Having the plug-in installed on your computer doesn't help you as a web developer (other than in testing out what you create).

Expression Web 2 is a tool for creating standards based websites, and it has some capabilities to add the functionality you want.

When you create a Silverlight application, what you get is a User Control.  You can have that User control handle everything in the UI, or just a section of a regular HTML or ASP.Net page.  Expression Web 2 does have, in it's Tool Box, under Ajax, both Silverlight (the control that establishes an instance of silverlight functionality - that you add to your ASP.Net page); and a Media Player control.  Learning how to make use of them to do what you want done will take some effort.  http://silverlight.net is an excellent resource.

You can accomplish your goal with the tools you have.  Other tools will make it easier.  Any investment you make in learning more about Silverlight will pay generous rewards.

    Hope it helps,
