SQL Server 2005 and SQL server 2000 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

I am new to SQL server. Can we backup and restore dabases interchangeably between the above two versions. The reason I am asking is that the development might happen in one version and the production might happen in another version. Please let me know which way is this compatible.

    Thanks.

  • Hi,

SQL Server 2005 is backwards compatible with backup files from version 2000 or 7.0 - so you can easily restore backups from those versions under 2005 or detach/attach data and log files.

If you search for Support for Backups from Earlier Versions of SQL Server in Books Online you will get confirmation of this.

The reverse however is not true - once restored/attached under 2005 the data files are updated and you cannot move them back to 2000.

Your options to go back to a 2000 server from 2005 would be to move the data between different version databases using DTS or SSIS etc.

    Regards,

    Gary.
