Upgrade SharePoint 2013 Foundation to SharePoint Server 2013 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I am trying to perform database attach migration form SharePoint 2013 Foundation to SharePoint 2013 Server. Now I am a using the procedure which is mentioned in the below link to perform the same. In document it is SharePoint 2010 to Sharepoint 2013 migration:

    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262483.aspx

I am totally confused regarding the below scenarios:

    1. Enabling or configuring service application

    2. Up-gradation of Service application

In the document it is mentioning the service application databases that can be upgraded as:

    a. Business Data Connectivity service
    b. Managed Metadata service
    c. Performance Point services
    d. Search
    e. Secure Store service
    f. User Profile service

Is it required all these databases need to be upgraded for SharePoint 2013 Foundation to SharePoint Server 2013 up gradation process.

If so I am here by providing the list of SharePoint databases which is present in the SQL Server. Please help me to map the database to the corresponding service application for the up gradation procedure:

Also TFS and SharePoint is using the same SQL Server, would it cause any dependency regarding the reports.

Please help me on this. Please provide any additional details that I might require to complete the process.

    Regards,

  • Hi Arun_100,

Map the database to the corresponding service application:

Refer to the following article about upgrade service applications to SharePoint 2013:

    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj839719

Copy databases to the new farm for upgrade to SharePoint 2013

  • No, you had it right, it is a move from SharePoint Foundation 2013 to SharePoint Standard 2013, from what i can see.

However you can't use the old 2010 approach for moving from Foundation to Standard, where you could simply change the license key. That worked in 2010 as the binaries were the same for Foundation as Standard/Enterprise. In 2013 the binaries are related but different, meaning you can't just change the license and so you have to perform a migration to a new farm. This process is similar to the 2010->2013 upgrade but skips some of the upgrade steps.

  • no need to uninstall the binaries of sharepoint foundation 2013 to upgrade to SharePoint server 2013... you can upgrade SharePoint server 2013 on  the same machine of foundation 2013.

Note: before upgrading production run the test upgrade....

  • I wouldn't try that, it's unsupported as even that blog says: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/16033.sharepoint-2013-migrate-from-sharepoint-foundation-2013-to-sharepoint-server-2013.aspx

In most foundation farms the only thing that really matters is the content database. If you're doing this right then you are building a side-by-side farm and you can test.

  • Hi,

Thank you all for the response, but the process mentioned in the TechNet blog clearly specifies that we have to perform database attach upgrade procedure for the same. The documentation shared by them points to SharePoint 2010 to SharePoint 2013 up-gradation in which they are upgrading the service application and content database after specifying the database.

Is it the same procedure that we have to follow here also. Is upgrading service application is required. If so can you please specify among the screenshot of the database which I have shared for SharePoint Foundation 2013 databases which are the service application databases that needed to be mapped and upgraded.

    Regards,

    Arun

  • The process to migrate from SharePoint Foundation 2013 to SharePoint Standard/Enterprise 2013 is fairly similar to that in a 2010 to 2013 migration.

The minimum you need is the Content Databases. Beyond that it depends how much re-working you are doing and how much you have configured on your Foundation farm, in many cases by taking the service databases you reduce the amount you have to re-create but it is generally optional. Lisa has given you a mapping of the databases to their types.
