display driver update sabotaged video playback? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Video playback is not working anymore (I cannot watch the sessions).
It happens after Windows Update installed
"Intel Corporation driver update for Intel(R) HD Graphics Family (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM 1.2)

Is there any way to rollback this? It's listed under "Update history", but not in "Installed Updates", so I cannot remove it. I opened the driver page for my display and got that the driver version is 9.17.10.2493.
There is a "Roll Back Driver" button, but it doesn't do anthing. Help! I want to be able to watch the //build session videos :(

  • Hi Dominik,

Sorry to hear your having trouble.  Let's have you try a System Restore to see if you can go back to the state before the update came down.  Press WIN+r, type rstrui, press Enter to get to the System Restore GUI.  Click Next and choose the last restore point, and click Next, then Finish to start the process.  Reply with results.

  • Yes, thank you. System restore restored the driver to version 9.17.10.2482 which enabled video playback for me.

  • I was also having issues with video playback and certain applications using video (like the weather app) crashing after installing this update, and the rollback worked for me as well.  One additional thing I did was make sure to go back into Windows Update and select 'Hide Update' after right-clicking on the Intel driver.  Since the driver is listed as Important, I'm assuming that it would have automatically been installed again.  Not positive about this, but I figured I'd throw in my 2 cents in case it helps someone else.

  • Today I received my replacement tablet - I sent the first one back due to a faulty GPU. The replacement was working great until an automatic driver update kicked in - and now the weather app just flickers and crashes. I will try the rollback and hope it fixes it, I wonder if this is going to be a widespread issue?

    EDIT:

Oddly enough I have no restore points to restore to. I saw the update for 2 seconds but it started installing before I had a chance to stop it. I see no visible way to roll back the driver or restore. I can try another full OS reset and try to catch it, but is there anything else I can try first?

    EDIT AGAIN:

So after another full reset, during the initial setup process I did not select "Use Express Settings" and instead pressed Customize so that I could disable automatic windows updates. Then I was able to load Winodws Update settings in Desktop view and choose "Hide Update" on the Intel driver. So far this is working.

  • Same problem for me as well.  A rollback of the driver caused the screen to blank, and when the display was touched anywhere, it just beeped.

Holding the power button down for 4 secondes to force a full power off and then turning it back on seemed to fix it.  One thing strange is that Windows Update does not notify me that there is a new video driver available.

  • If you have received the bad driver (2493), please roll it back from device manager. I have tested that behavior and it should work (I'm not sure why booknut's and Dominik's systems did not).

The resolution will be a driver with version 2511, and it should be up soon.

We are aware of this issue and are working to resolve it as soon as possible!

Update 11AM: the bad driver has been pulled.

Update 12:40PM: the new driver should be available, and will be pushed down as a critical update shortly.

  • I'm getting this as well due to windows update.  I just did an OS reset, my question is which update is the one causing this issue so I can avoid installing it? Or should I just avoid installing all the updates and wait for Microsoft's next batch of goodies? It would also be good if the updates have different labels on them. We all know that their "Updates for Windows Developer Preview" right?

  • Version 2511 of the Intel HD driver is available via Windows Update this morning. I was having the same issues with the Weather app 'green screening' on me after I installed 2493. I've updated today but so far I can't get the Weather app to even finish 'gathering the latest weather info', I suspect that is a connectivity issue.

So it remains to be seen if the driver update fixes the issues seen but give it a try.

  • If you are seeing a driver upgrade now, it is the good driver. We pulled the bad one from Windows Update.

  • I started experiencing different 'issues' with the newest updated driver, so I rolled back again.

The display was refreshing slowly in certain cases when I plugged it into a projector, and for some reason or other I couldn't manage to pin an app to the side; although that may have been because I was connected to the projector?

  • Were you in extend or duplicate mode when you were unable to "pin an app to the side", and do you mean Aero Snap in the desktop or the 70/30 split introduced in Win8?

I will investigate your slow refresh rates, though I am currently unaware of any issues in that area on 2511.
