  • I have the following three questions:

Is Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise the same?

Is Windows 10 IoT enterprise and Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB the same?

I already have a windows 10 Enterprise PC. Should i purchase a separate license for Windows 10 IoT Enterprise?

  • Windows 10 IoT Enterprise is Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB. The IoT is just a marketing spin to align with IoT Mobile and IoT Core

  • Windows 10 IoT Enterprise is the marketing SKU name for the Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB edition that is available through the Industry OEM channel.  Enterprise LTSB is the same base OS as Windows 10 Enterprise without the store UX, Cortana, Edge or any of the UWP applications that are serviced through the store such as News, Sports, Finance, etc.

  • Hey Arun,

now the statement from the Avnet side.. :-)

We have to differentiate between the technical side and the licensing side.

On the technical side, the Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSB is the same as the "normal"

Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB. But: Not on the licensing term side.

The normal version is only available over the volume channel and as well as CB, CBB and LTSB version.

Volume channel is for internal company use only (Standard enterprise IT channel).

The IoT Enterprise is only available as LTSB version over the Embedded IoT channel, the Embedded OEM is

allowed to resell the licenses with their own solutions (bundled with HW).

So that's why the products are handled as 2 different products as the licenses terms are different.

    Best regards,

    Martin

  • Again, it is noted in my article: http://annabooks.com/Articles/Articles_IoT10/Windows-10-IoT-E-Addendum-1%20Rev1.4.pdf

There is Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB. The LTSB version is Windows 10 IoT Enterprise. The non-LTSB version is for PC and Tablets that will be updated every few months. Enterprise LTSB / IoT Enterprise will be updated every few years, and it is the only version licensed to IoT/Embedded OEMs.

Microsoft has implemented a Linux like support model for the two types of customers - PC/Tablet and IoT/Embedded. The PC/Tablet will be on a faster update track. The IoT/Embedded will be on a slower, but long term supported version since these system are typically around for 10 years.

  • something like this?

  • Sorry, I will rephrase my question then,

Is Windows 10 IoT enterprise altogether a new OS image i.e., completely different from Window 10 Enterprise Desktop edition?

    (or)

Is it just an additional license over Windows 10 Enterprise desktop to unlock the features of Windows IoT enterprise?

Is Windows 10 IoT Enterprise OS image available for download in MSDN subscriptions and if available then what is the term i have to use so as to locate this image in MSDN subscriptions?

  • Hi,

    Thanks for the reply.

The following URL mentions that Windows 10 IoT Enterprise is actually Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSB

    http://esg.teldevice.co.jp/product/microsoft/windows10iot/index.html

Page 11 of the following PDF also mentions that "Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSB" and "Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB" are two different variants.

Can you please clarify on this.

  • Hi Sean,

    Thanks for the reply.

The following is the URL i am referring to:

    http://www.embeddedcomputingconference.ch/pdf_2015/S3R6_Avnet_Silica.pdf

In the above URL, I could see two LTSB versions:

    • Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB
    • Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSB

    This is making me confused......

    Please clarify.

  • Hi Arun,

You are asking Microsoft about an Avnet pdf.  You have been provided with the Microsoft answer by Sean, an IoT MVP / Windows Embedded Expert & Zeeshan, an IoT Team Member.  However, if you are still confused by the Avnet post, maybe you should ask Avnet to clarify their pdf for you?  Avnet is a distributer and will be able to tell you what is involved with the purchase of each version of Windows 10.

    Sincerely,

    IoTGirl

  • I work with Avnet, and my last post is the answer to the slide. The slide deck itself could be better constructed to not be confusing without a verbal explanation.

In my Windows 10 IoT Enterprise training class, I find it takes visual + verbal to communicate the message.

  • Windows 10 IoT Enterprise is really Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB. Windows 10 IoT Enterprise is just a marketing name.

So yes, it only work with x86 boards.

i assume you can download trial versions from your msdn account but you can ask the proper forum

  • why do you kept avoid the original questions ???

  • Hi Michael,

The original questions are all answered

Is Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise the same? Yes. See Sean's answer above

Is Windows 10 IoT enterprise and Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB the same? Yes, 2015 denotes when the LTSB drop was taken. See Sean's answer above.

I already have a windows 10 Enterprise PC. Should i purchase a separate license for Windows 10 IoT Enterprise? This is actually a license question. See Martin's answer above.

    Sincerely,

    IoTGirl

  • Just to confirm the above - for the new version of W10 it is still the same, I mean: W10 Enterprise LTSC and W10 IoT Enterprise LTSC are the same thing technically, the only difference is licensing?

    In this article:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4464619/windows-10-update-history

    both versions are mentioned separately:

    Affected platforms:

    • Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019
    • Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019

    regards,

    Alex

They are the same code base but licensed differently based on their intended usage.
