Mechanism Of Data Refreshing In Power Pivot RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Is it a good mechanism when handling  millions of data in warehouse...???? Everytime it will follow delete/insert mechanism for refreshing? How much fast it is then? Will it be logical to use power pivot from SSAS cube and dimensions when it is the case of handling millions of records???What is the right way???

  • The speed of the refresh in Power Pivot really depends on a lot of factors like the location of your data source, the speed of the network, the complexity of the query used to import the data, etc.

I have had workbooks where the fact table had several million rows of data refresh in a few seconds from a fairly new, above average spec server in the same building.  I have had a similar size data set take 10 - 20 minutes to refresh when pulling from a server about 2,000 miles away on a slower internet connection.

There are really too many factors to have a standard answer so the best suggestion would be to do some testing.  If the refresh time is not reasonable for your needs, then you may want to consider using SSAS Tabular instead of Power Pivot where you can create partitions and don't have to refresh the entire data set at once.
