Are There any Achievement and Networking APIs?

    Question

  • Hey guys I was wondering if there are any universal API's like XBOX Live--but for smaller game developers?

  • For Windows Store apps, network communication is done through various WinRT APIs (Windows.Networking).

Xbox LIVE provides services including identity (aka gamertag and achievements), match-making, DLC, and voice chat. The actual networking is done through standard networking mechanisms, so you should focus on those for implementing multiplayer in your game. Access to the Xbox LIVE service APIs is currently managed by Microsoft Studios per this FAQ.

I'm not sure what other match-making services are currently supported in the Windows Store, but you could run your own service for your games (although I understand that's not practical for an indie shop).
