  • Question

  • Can we compare two different documents using compare field? If it is possible, can we further investigate about the track changes by using a macro?

  • The compare field (see http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/field-codes-compare-field-HP005186141.aspx) can only compare content within the field's code, though you could embed INCLUDETEXT and/or REF fields in it to import the content of the documents. That said, the compare field will only tell you whether the strings it compares are the same, not what the differences are or whether they're formatted differently. In most cases you can probably get just as good information by looking at the file sizes in Windows Explorer. If you want a meaningful comparison, you'll need to use Word's Compare function (see Review|Compare).

As for track changes, that can be very useful ,provided in was enabled for all the changes. It can return a lot of information about the nature of each change, who made it and when.
