Problem with Standard Approval workflow after applying SP2 and Infrastructure updates RRS feed

  • Question

  • After we applied SharePoint SP2 to our farms some users have reported an issue with standard OOTB approval workflows. There is a field that used to show data and after the update no longer shows the expected data. We are trying to determine if this is a bug or normal behavior after the updates.

    User followed these steps:

When the user starts a standard approval workflow (out of the box workflow), he/she types a message (“Type a message to include with your request :”).
This message shows on the e-mail that is sent to the user.  When the user clicks on the link provided on the e-mail and goes to the SharePoint page to approve or reject the workflow task, the message does not show up ( Field bellow “Due by:“ is blank).
The same issue happens if the user goes to the workflow task directly, without using the link on the e-mail.

He tested in different site collections and got the same result.

This issue started around February 04, 2010. This is when SP2 and infrastructure updates were applied to our Sharepoint 2007 environment.

    Steps to recreate the problem

    1.  Create new site collection.

    2.  Activate site collection feature:  Routing Workflows.

    3.  Create a new custom list.

    4.  From your new list page, navigate to List Settings -> Workflow Settings to create a new workflow.

4a. Accept the defaults for an Approval workflow, except check the box to start the workflow when an item is created.

4b. Click 'Next' for more workflow settings.

4c. Add a user to the Approver field (to be the recipient of the workflow emails).

4d. Type something specific in the "Message to include... " field.  This is the message you will be looking for later.

    4e. Save the workflow.

    5.  Go back to the custom list you created in step 3, and add a new item.

    6.  You will receive 2 emails.  The first one indicating the item was created, and the second one indicating that a task was assigned to you in the workflow task table.  Note that the second email contains your custom message from step 4d.

    7.  Go to the Task list associated with the workflow (there is a link in the email).

    8.  If you like, you can add the "Description" field to you task's view page to verify that your custom message is part of the task.  ( on a side note, it is the "Description" field on the task list, but it comes from the "Body" field of the associated content type.)

    9.  Open up the task and notice the blank, read-only box below the "Due By" field.  This is the place that the user is expecting to see the custom message.  Since this box is blank on every site I've tested, I have no way of determining that the message is actually supposed to be there, other than the fact that the user seems to know what he's talking about, and can recall specifically when that field "disappeared
