BI Content from DEV to Test to Prod in SharePoint 2013 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Has anyone had any experience with moving business intelligence content like Power Views, PowerPivots, Data Connections, Tabular etc from DEV to Test to Prod in a SharePoint 2013 on premise environment?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Thanks for your reply Jerry but I had specifically asked for any info regarding on premise versions of SharePoint 2013.

I have figured out a way to move Power Views by following the steps below:

    • 1. Pre-requisite is to have a data connection in the Data Connections library with the following set up in Test

       - same connection name as in DEV (preferably without spaces)
       - pointing to test server (TEST)
       - same database name

      To Test

       - Download the Power View file from the DEV environment and save to local drive. Alternatively open the Power View library of the DEV SharePoint site in Explorer mode.

       - Open the Power View gallery in the Test SharePoint site in Explorer mode.

       - Upload the Power View using the SharePoint UI or copy the file from the DEV Explorer window to the Test Explorer window.

       - Once the file is copied across, refresh the Test SharePoint site. Open the properties for the file by clicking the 3 dots next to the file name and click 'Manage Data Sources'.

       - Click the data source to open it's properties.

       - Modify the path to point to the Test environment.

The manual steps above were successful in moving a Power View file from the DEV SharePoint environment to the Test SharePoint environment.
