Visio 2010 Standard vs. Professional RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a question regarding the difference between Visio 2010 Standard and Professional versions.

I am looking to purchase, but I am not sure if the Professional version is worth the added cost.  The only feature that I would miss that does not come with the Standard version is all of the templates and sample diagrams for things like network and ITIL diagrams.

My question is, can I download and install these templates from the internet or will I have to purchase the Professional version to be able to use these templates?

  • The main thing you have missed is that most of the automated data linking is done in Pro and Premium. The part most people miss is that the high end 'templates' are really application based which is called from the template/stencils, this is not downloadable. If all you need is some simple diagrams without automation based assistance, standard should be fine.

  • I have heard that the Software stencils (aka Common Controls - that include web/software UI elements such as dropdown menus, mouse states, etc.) are only in the Professional version not Standard.    Is this accurate?

It is accurate-ish. Well, they are not in Standard, but they are also in Premium as well as Professional.
