I am currently working on a small app that allows our employees to login and get some limited information from their wireless devices.

We need to be able to block the usage of this site from desktop browsers for security reasons.

I have tried using the browser capabilities and

Request.Browser("IsMobileDevice") but the problem is that the device list from MS is so old that most of the devices being used return false.

So then i thought "i'll just block "IE", "MSIE" when using

Dim hbc As HttpBrowserCapabilities = Request.Browser

if hbc.browser = "IE" then block etc.

The problem with this is that even IE on the mobile devices shows up as just "IE".

I would just use the profiller to profile the devices that are not detected, but the problem is that our employees buy their own devices, so there are countless possibilities of devices that could be used.

How can i effectively block desktop usage without having to profile each device?  or Where can I download more device profiles?  I mean, I must not be the only person who needs the profile for a Blackberry 7100 or 8700 right?

    Any advice  would be appreciated.

There seems to be a dearth of support for ASP.NET mobile controls....

I created a profile for a Blackberry 7250 using the online profiler:

    http://www.asp.net/mobile/profile/default.aspx

You can generate a profile then stick it in machine.config and tweak what the BrowserCapabilities detects and returns.

Thanks Mannaggia, we have actually used the profiler, and it works, it just seems that there should be a central repository for these profiles...

Can you post your profile to this post?

I'll post any we make also.

Is there any tool, which would translate uaprofile to .browser file?

You can get UAProfiles from http://www.uaprofile.com, but that idea for a tools seems quite nice. It's probably a newbie question, but could you point me at the .browser spec? It would be cool to offer .browser files from there.

OK, just seen them... mark the conversion down as "non-trivial"!
