Group Policy: Do not show the Start Menu when the user logs in

    Question

  • Is the 'Do not show the Start Menu when the user logs in' Group Policy item working in the Windows Developer Preview? It seems to have no effect, but maybe I'm applying it incorrectly.

I've read about the 'rename shsxs.dll' trick for disabling the new Start screen entirely, but that's perhaps throwing the baby out with the bath water.

  • Hi there,

Can you help clarify by group policy, do you mean accessing the local group policy editor?

    Regards,

    Bobby

  • Hi Bobby,

Yes, I mean accessing the local group policy editor.

That particular setting (which I think should be enabled by default for non-touch devices) seems to be linked to a DWORD in the Registry named 'DontShowStartMenuOnLogin' (under HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer), but setting that value to 1 makes no difference, either, so I guess it's not functional in this build.

    Cheers.
