Word Mail Merge Data Source - Help! RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

I'm trying to use Word's mail merge functionality through Java by passing it the relevant data through an appropriately formatted file. This is all well and good - apart from any currency (£) symbols are *SOMETIMES* appearing as ú symbols!

After much searching & trial and error, the problem lies in the fact that Word is importing the data source as an "MS-DOS" file rather than "Windows (Default)" file. When I've tried to import the relevant data source myself manually, it selects MS-DOS automatically instead of "Windows (Default)"? It's making no sense to me why some data files would be automatically selected as "Windows (Default)" formatting, whereas others are selected as "MS-DOS" formatting (exactly the same data source format, so no differences there).

Can anyone shed any light on this? Completely and utterly confused...

    Cheers

  • Hi Daniel

I'm not an expert in this area and I think you might have better luck on coming across people with experience in this area in the end-user forum: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/word

However, to the best of my recollection, it has to do with the non-visible encoding. I think the information on wikipedia about BOM and encoding points in the right direction, although it doesn't tell you how to incorporate this in your text file (and I don't know the particulars): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Text_file

In a nutshell, I think the file needs to contain something inside it to indicate that it's ANSI or Unicode rather than ASCII.
