had to reinstall windows 7 and office suite 2013. Seems lost visual studio, trying to get back program with out download, And Projects, did find bin files and others of my projects Lots files moved to C:\windows.Old

Question

• Had to
reinstall Windows 7 and Office suite 2013 both 64 bit.

Noticed it
seems what didn't get erased was "MOVED' to C:\windows.

Trying to
find how to get those back.

Seems
sometimes easy to get back if a word doc or excel.

BUT I had
visual studio installed. With templates for word and excel, and projects finished
and ones not finished.

Don’t know
how and if possible to make Visual studio usable again, without downloading
again the complete program.

LAST DOWNLOAD of program TOOK OVER 7 HRS. so you can see why want to skip download if possible.

I did notice I had
what looked like cab and msi and bin files referencing Visual Studio.

Yes I did get
the free version of visual studio. Just not the latest free version.

thanks for any help

• Hi Mark J,

Thank you for your post.

Do you mean that your VS couldn't be used after re-installing Win7?

If some packages or templates are missing, i suggest you repair your VS :
1.Go to Control Panel >Programs >Programs and Features
2.Select Microsoft Visual Studio and click on 'repair'.

• some to all files got moved to c:\window.old

when I had to reinstall windows and office pro

so I do not know if I ONLY have to copy files FROM c:\windows.old\program files \common7 to c:\windows\program files\common7

and copy all paths completely and files to a same path without "old" ?

or have to make some changes to the registry file.

• Hi Mark,

Copy all paths completely and files to a same path without "old" is much better.

• Lana Xu,

For your info, when I reinstalled Win7

1. Microsft decided by its self to move many files to "...Windows.old\...."

as a standard practice to try to save most items, if possible.

2. I don't know "ALL" the files that are Visual Studio, YES some are perty clear part of Visula studio. Many seem to be in "Common Files" folder.

BUT NOTHING I CAN FIND ABOUT FILES to tell if visual studio or not.

3. after I move over the clearly visual studio files over how am I going I to tell what other files to move over. When I do not have a list of what Visual Studios Needs?

Did copy paths and files over.

But did not show up under all programs.

or using

1.Go to Control Panel >Programs >Programs and Features
2.Select Microsoft Visual Studio and click on 'repair'.

MAYBE I need to know what the default install location is, and make those paths.

Also the ONLY visual folder I could find was

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 12.0

had a sub folders Common7 and IDE

that had files vsdia_regwcf dated 10/5/2013 type application

I know I did update to new version from older version (think it was called community) I think about 2014 or 2015

did work. seems had older and newer versions INCLUDEING separate listing on start menu.

maybe if I if I can search for file that starts visual studio, starting with that file and folder I can work out rest to bring back visual studio.

• Hi Mark,

I agree that you are to the point, you could install VS 2015 Community with Update 3, it will also provide you a better experience for program development.
