SQL Server 2008 Cluster Service pack reportign as not installed RRS feed

  • Question

  • All,

We have recently installed a SQL 2008 Standard Active/Passive Cluster on Server 2008 R2 Enterprise (Fully Patched).

To install SQL server 2008 on the Nodes we obviously had to slipstream the installer for service pack 3 due to the RTM release of SQL 2008 not being support on Server 2008 R2.

The SQL 2008 Cluster install has been done as per best practise and completed successfully.

SQL Cluster is operating correctly, fails over and is hooting along.

On reboot of the server we are experiencing the current warning:

    ApplicationExperienceWarning -

"The application (Microsoft SQL Server 2008, from vendor Microsoft) has the following problem: After SQL Server Setup completes, you must apply SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or a later service pack before you run SQL Server 2008 on this version of Windows."

We have attempted to re-apply SP3 to each node however the SP3 installer reports that the service pack is installed for all compoments, on both nodes in the cluster and will not allow for its installation.

This can be confirmed by reviewing the SQL server DB instance version and SQL tools version.

I'm wondering if the slipstreamed install did not write a registry variable correctly during installation?

Any assistance would be appreciated, its not a high priority but would like to find the root cause. Most of our clusters are 2008 R2 however due to a specific application compatibility issue, this one needed to be deployed as 2008.

    Thanks in advance.

  • What's the warning timestamp ? maybe someone attempted to launch the installer before slipstreaming and this warning was logged

I say ignore the warning as long as the instance version is reported to be SP3 and running. if it wasn't patched then it wouldn't have been running
