Backstage not showing in latest Outlook RRS feed

  • Question

  • It looks like something in a recent Office update broke (or changed) backstage.

    My add-in uses the <backstage> definition below.

    On "Microsoft Outlook 2016 MSO (16.0.7127.1026) 32-bit" the backstage tab shows up.

    On "Microsoft Outlook 2016 MSO (16.0.7503.1000) 32-bit" it does not.

    Trimmed down for repro:

      <backstage>
        <tab id="testArea" label="Test">
          <firstColumn>
            <group id="aboutGroup" label="About the add-in">
              <topItems>
                <labelControl id="about1" label="Witty label."/>
              </topItems>
            </group>
          </firstColumn>
        </tab>
      </backstage>
    Any ideas?

  • Looks like this is fixed in Outlook 2016 MSO (16.0.7329.1051) 32-bit. Using that build, I don't see the problem any more. That is, I do see the backstage element for my minimal repro.

  • Did you turn on ribbon error notifications (File | Options | Advanced | Developer | Show User interface errors) ?

  • Good call, I hadn't, but I have now. Sadly, no messages are displayed yet backstage still isn't displayed.

    The rest of the add-in works fine so I know it's loaded and the Microsoft.Outlook.Explorer XML was loaded and parsed.

    Makes no difference if I run Outlook stand-alone or under the debugger.

    Any other pointers appreciated!

  • What is your complete XML?

  • The complete XML has <ribbon> and <contextMenus> sections, but this repros with just the <backstage> section:

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <customUI xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/office/2009/07/customui" onLoad="Ribbon_Load">
      <backstage>
        <tab id="testArea" label="Test">
          <firstColumn>
            <group id="aboutGroup" label="About the add-in">
              <topItems>
                <labelControl id="about1" label="Witty label."/>
              </topItems>
            </group>
          </firstColumn>
        </tab>
      </backstage>
    </customUI>

    I can clean up the complete XML (remove internal names, etc.) but I don't think the other sections are relevant given the above repro. I could be wrong, though. I'll create a minimal project so I can share the whole thing.

  • Minimal project is here:

    The add-in creates a TEST group on the mail tab so you know it's working and a TEST tab on the backstage. The backstage tab shows as expected on 16.0.7127.1026 but not on 16.0.7503.1000. There could certainly be other differences in these 2 Outlook installations. I'll victimize some co-workers to gather more data.
