Is desktop application allowed to be added and be discoverable in windows store?

    Question

  • Hi,

I read in  (https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dn322034(v=vs.85).aspx) &  (https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt637086%28v=vs.85%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396) that desktop application will not be discoverable in windows store anymore. Then again i see articles defining process for adding desktop app to windows store on msdn website. I am now confused whether it is allowed or not allowed to add a new desktop application in the windows store. Can anyone give me a confirm latest news for desktop applications (.exe setup files) on windows store?

  • Hi!

I'm pretty sure that you can't add a normal desktop application to the windows store because in the steps of publishing an app to the store, you have to download a package with a specific format (.xap, .appx, .appxbundle, .appxupload).

As far as I know there is no normal desktop application will generate this kind of package and .exe doesn't belong to the list.

    Hope it wil be useful.

  • Hi Avy,

From upload app package, we can see that the package page will let you upload .xap, .appx, .appupload, and/or .appxbundle file. So you may not publish desktop app in the store now.

  • Hi Nordine,

Thanks for the above information. The reason i asked the question was because Windows store have been allowing desktop apps (.exe ,etc files) to be added to their store . Recently in 2015 they updated their website informing that they no longer accepts apps. (https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dn322034%28v=vs.85%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396)

"Desktop application listings are not a part of the Windows 10 Dev Center and Windows 10 Store experiences. Existing Desktop application listings will not be discoverable in the Windows Store on Windows 10, but will remain available for Windows 8 and 8.1 users. While existing desktop application listings cannot be updated in the Windows Dev Center, it is still possible to file a support ticket to have a listing removed by Microsoft. For more information on Unified Dev Center dashboard preview and other upcoming Store changes, visit the Microsoft Building Apps blog."

Since then they have not updated their website regarding the desktop application on store. I just need a confirmation regarding the same.

  • I have been programming since about 1970 (I am not a novice to programming in general) and I am having difficulty finding answers from Microsoft about what can be put into the store. I can't find anything in the MSDN that clearly specifies that.

From my point of view, all the applications that I see in the store that can be used in my Windows 10 (desktop) are desktop applications, so the idea that no desktop applications can be found in the store is very confusing.

I am not trying to hijack this thread. I am not sure whether my question is the same or if I should create a new question. I assume that my question has been asked many times before but I can't find anything from Microsoft and it seems that others are having difficulty too.

  • You cannot add a Desktop app directly.

The way to do it is first convert it to an Appx using the Desktop App Converter.

    See https://forum.xojo.com/36149-how-to-get-a-xojo-app-in-the-windows-store/0

When you have a working AppX, submit you app here : https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/projects/campaigns/desktop-bridge#Publish

A Microsoft rep will contact you, and after he has vetted the app, you will be able to upload it to the store.

I have currently 4 Desktop apps in the Store that went through this process.

  • desktop apps can be added to the store if they are converted. Conversion is simple except for the licensing part (if you charge money). If you are an old hand programmer have a look here

    http://zabkat.com/blog/winrt-win32-store-registration.htm

And yes, converted apps are present in store search results
