Changing water color RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi ,

I'm using a map and i'm trying to change the color of the water.

    I'm using this as example:

    https://bingmapsv8samples.azurewebsites.net/#Simple%20Style%20Editor

i've added: "water":{"fillColor":"#B7CDDE"} , and this indeed changes the water color - but not for all areas:

when zoom-in to Japan , I have an area in the water that didn't change color (See img):

How can I change this area also? How is this area defined?

    Thanks,

  • Unfortunately Japan and Korea are rendered differently using an offline process by local data providers and don't work with custom styling.

  • Thanks for the answer.

So , there is no way to change the color of the water including those areas?

Do you know is this is written somewhere officially?

    Thanks,

  • Correct. The UWP map control allows you to switch off the raster regions for Japan and Korea which will fall back to a lower detail data set that will at least be stylistically consistent. The web control doesn't support this option. This is documented as part of the styling documentation for the V8 map control here:

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt823636.aspx

The following are some known limitations of custom map styles.

    • Custom styles are not supported for all country maps. Custom maps styles require the use of vector map data. Some countries have strict regulations around vector map data which prevents the Bing Maps team from using it to create custom map styles on the fly. This effects China, South Korea, and Japan currently. If you zoom into one of these countries, you will see the default map tile style appear for these countries while surrounding areas will use the custom map style.

  • I see.

Is there an option to use different web control to resolve this? Something that I can do from my side to overcome this? (rather then keep the original water style).

    Thanks,

  • The only Bing control I'm aware of that supports switching off the raster regions in Japan and Korea to get consistent styling is the UWP map control for Windows apps

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/uwp/maps-and-location/display-maps

If you want to see how custom styling works with all the Bing map controls, the mapstylesheet editor app will allow you to interactively edit styles
