Winsock and Bluetooth Sensors RRS feed

  • Question

  • Windows Sensor API has routines to communicate with a sensor that is connected.  This API seems to assume that the sensor is already connect.  Is there a Windows API that support bluetooth discovery and connection, so that the user doesn't have to use "Add a device" wizard to detect and connect to a sensor?

Winsock appears to allow bluetooth device discovery but it's not clear if and how I can use the Winsock and Sensor APIs.

  • Thanks for the question.

There is no inbox sensor driver support for Bluetooth sensors that would automatically expose these as sensors through the Windows Sensor API.

To enable Bluetooth sensors through the Sensor API, a third party sensor driver will need to be provided.  That third party driver, if one exists, would then use the Bluetooth APIs or Winsock to communicate to the device and manage its connection state.

Bluetooth devices need to be paired in order to exchange or verify the PIN.  I'm not aware of an API that allows a desktop app to trigger the pairing outside of "Add a device", so the user will have to manually pair the Bluetooth device.
