Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition with Remote SQL Server (Not Express) RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying to connect to remote SQL Server (Not an Express, full version) database. I am unable to do it.

Here is what i am doing in Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Expess Edition....

    In my project....

Data -> Add New Data Source -> Select Database -> Click Next

Next screen is Data Source Configuration Wizard, This will only allow me to connect to local Database.. I cannot edit Connection string (graed out)

If i click New Connection... it will still only ask me for local file (sql or access).. I cannot find where i can put remote SQL server information.

Here is my Conclusion: Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition will not allow connection to remote SQL Server. I need to buy full version of Visual Studio to do this.

Please Correct me if i am wrong? and also any doc/link that has steps to do this.

    Thank you for your help.

  • Hi,

You are right, the Express edition does not support advanced data access scenarios such as accessing data from a remote server.  (It does not have the Server Explorer tool window).
