Error when opening some files

    Question

  • This sort of minor but when I open some files using VS 2015.3 I get an error and a message to check the activity log.  I have done a repair but am not sure really what's causing the problem so don't know where to look.

    Suggestions?

An exception has been encountered. This may be caused by an extension.

  • Hi John,

Thank you for posting in MSDN forum.

    >>An exception has been encountered. This may be caused by an extension.

This error information indicates that there could be an add-in or extension that affect your VS running.

Please try the steps as below:

    1. Restart your machine and disable anti-virus software and firewall and run your Visual Studio as administrator

    2. Run Visual Studio in safemode to Check whether some add-ins and extensions affect it.

Please open Windows Explorer, and navigate to  <Visual Studio Installation Path>\Common7\IDE (by default is C:\Program Files \Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Common7\IDE)

    Run Devenv.exe /SafeMode

If the VS works fine after running the Safemode,  we need to figure out which extension caused this issue, please go to Tools> Extensions and Updates to disable the add-ins you installed one by one, check which affect your VS running.
