transaction log restore with external replication RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

We have a need to do block level replication of a SQL 2005 or 2008 server because it has some custom applications installed that are difficult to intsall and maintain in two different places.  That said, we also have a low RPO of 5 minutes.  Is it possible to do a transaction log restore w/out the full assuming the databases are intact?  Here's the timeline/scenario:

01:00 - full sql backup (here just to recognize that we do full backups)

    01:30 - block level replication

    01:35 - tlog backup

    01:40 - tlog backup

    01:41 - failure

We then stand up server from the 01:30 replication recovery point.  It's live, databases online, happy, etc.  We then want to do a tlog restore to get the databases up to 01:40.  Is this possible?

The moment you make the database online (by restoring the last tlog backup with recovery), if you need to restore another transaction log, then you have to start from Full Backup, all transaction level backups and the one at 1:40 which needs to be restored with recovery.

  • It isn't clear how you got the database to your secondary site in the first place. But a log restore always starts with a database restore.
