Security risk with SB or Flickr? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I entered the following program into SB:

    GraphicsWindow.Title = "Example 23-1"
    GraphicsWindow.Width = 600
    GraphicsWindow.Height = 400
    Photo = Flickr.GetPictureOfMoment()
    GraphicsWindow.DrawResizedImage(Photo, 0, 0, 600, 400)
    Goto GetPhoto

    When it runs, Norton 360 gives a SONAR warning about checking, then removing, a security problem.  Eventually, Norton comes up with a dialogue that says I have to restart the computer in order to eliminate the security problems.

    I'm running XP SP3 with all updates.

    What's going on?

  • My conclusion would be that Norton is in error here - frankly my experience of Norton (albeit several years ago when I finally gave up with it) is it is slow, resource hungry, gives loads of false positives (perhaps to make it look like its doing something useful?) and it costs.

    In this case downloading a Flicker image isn't a serious security risk - although downloading anything has some risk - perhaps also investigate Norton settings or try something else (better).  My advice would be to regularly do all updates, have a decent backup policy, carefully check firewall settings, replace Norton (uninstall is hard work but can be done) with MS Security Essentials (free) and most importantly use common sense with what you download.
