Hot swapping the service DLL RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I would like to hot-swap services (mainly for update purpose) from time to time. However when the dsshost.exe is running all the DLLs are connected to it and cannot be replaced.

Is it possible to achieve this scenario somehow?
    -       Disconnect the dsshost.exe from the DLL.
    -       Replace DLL.
    -       Refresh the contract cache.
    -       Load new DLL and start the service.

I think that this feature is quite important for environments where dsshost.exe reboot is time consuming.

  • DssHost.exe does not do that. Its actually a .Net 'feature'. This blog http://blogs.msdn.com/b/jasonz/archive/2004/05/31/145105.aspx explains the reasons - and offers some alternatives.

  • I see the problem. Thank you for the answer and some alternative. I will try to write services in an app domain as a first solution and multiple dsshost instances as they may easily communicate with each other as a second solution. In fact two instances of the dsshost should be enough to achieve the hot swapping in my case.

    Best regards
