Is it possible to use Certificate Based Authentication with the Exchange Web Services Virtual Directory (Exchange 2013 or 2016) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is it possible to use Certificate Based Authentication with the Exchange Web Services Virtual Directory (Exchange 2013 or 2016)

We have been using CBA for EAS and are looking to find out if we can enable CBA for EWS clients as well.

  • Not without extra tools. You'll need a hardware load balancer (NetScaler, F5, Kemp, ...) or a third-party solution (Entrust, Duo Security, C7 Solutions, PointSharp, JustCoin, Eset, ...) to do that.

There is two factor authentication (which is better than CBA) for Azure, Hotmail, Outlook.com and Office365, but not (yet) for Exchange.

Microsoft offered a solution using ForeFront since Exchange 2010, see https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=302.
