SQL 2016 - Integration Services Catalog (SSISDB) -Install Fails - Access is denied. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello any guidance is greatly appreciated.

SQL Server 2016EE (Fresh Environment), Trying to install Integrations Services Catalog (SSISDB)

    Installation Attempts

    • Running SSMS 2016 as Admin. - Error below
    • Run Powershell - Error below

    Error encountered with SSMS\Powershell

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

The operating system returned the error '5(Access is denied.)' while attempting 'RestoreContainer::ValidateTargetForCreation' on 'f:\SQL\MSSQLSERVER\Data\MSSQL13.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\SSISDB.ldf'.
File 'log' cannot be restored to 'f:\SQL\MSSQLSERVER\Data\MSSQL13.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\SSISDB.ldf'. Use WITH MOVE to identify a valid location for the file.
Problems were identified while planning for the RESTORE statement. Previous messages provide details.
RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3634)

Is there a manual method (TSQL) to restore the SSISDB and configure?

    Thanks Mark

    Steps to resolve

    • Open File Server Resource Manager
    • Change to  F:\ to "Passive"
    • SSMS 2016 | Create Catalog -> 'Yahoo - Success'
    • Change back  F:\ to "Active "

  • Did you check this (quite complex, I admit) process documented here

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/integration-services/catalog/ssis-catalog?view=sql-server-ver15

(You can scroll down to backup and then to restore sections in that document)

  • Thank You Naomi,  I really appreciate the guidance!

    Quite complex indeed...

  • Naomi, from what I read,

Item 4, assumes a SSISDB Backup from an existing\deployed SSIS Catalog.

Execute the scripts that you created in the To Back up the SSIS Database for ##MS_SSISServerCleanupJobLogin##, sp_ssis_startup, and SSIS Server Maintenance Job.

I expect that and possibly other things is what the SSMS install does.

    `Hmmm I got a pickle, that's for sure

  • Check to verify that you have SQL Server integration services installed. The best check is to look for the service.

  • Hilary, thanks for the reply,

Yes, MsDtsServer130 is executing.  Restarted the Service and tried to 'Create Catalog' with SSMS 16, failed again.  But that gives me an IDEA...

    FOLDER: F:\SQL\MSSQLSERVER\Data\MSSQL13.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA

Current Files in FOLDER - Master, Model, MSDB (MDF,LDF)

    So lets try

    • Create a file, Test.txt, not problem file created
    • Create a file, Test.mdf, not problem file created
    • Create a file, Test.ldx, not problem file created
    • Create a file, Test.ldf, Failure -  Cannot create LDF files here
    • Create Database, Test, Fails, Access denied on LDF 'Log'.

Something is blocking 'LDF' files from being created in this FOLDER.

What could BLOCK 'LDFs'  From FOLDER - GPO?

  • Hi MarkCovi,

    FOLDER: F:\SQL\MSSQLSERVER\Data\MSSQL13.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA

Please check if the folder exists.

We can refer to Create the SSIS Catalog.
