When mapping from a VM to a Azure File Share where the connection is SFTP (using IP based endpoints) RRS feed

  • Question

  • When mapping from a VM to a Azure File Share where the connection is SFTP (using IP based endpoints).

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/files/storage-how-to-create-file-share

Will the steps provided in the link and image below allow creating a mapped drive  on a source VM using a UNC path with IP's only?  The image below shows We have SFTP servers which will need to map to this Azure File Share using IP.

on-premise  SFTP server (Domain 1)>>>>  Azure File Share(Domain 2).   Is this possible between different domains?

  • Hi kimdav111,

The instructions you have screenshotted are for mounting an Azure file share over SMB. Azure Files doesn't have SFTP protocol support, so to use SFTP to access your file share, you will need to front it with a Linux VM (or a third party product for Windows).

When you have setup SFTP over your Azure file share, you can mount with a Linux SSH client. Note that Windows also provides SSH functionality through the Windows Subsystem for Linux in Windows 10, or you can use a third party product to access via SFTP.

Hope this helps - please let us know if you have any follow up questions.

  • I thought we can mount a azure file share on the windows SFTP server and configure flat files to be deposited on this network share?  The link is showing a network share being mounted on a windows server.  We have a SFTP server in front of the File Share and the destination endpoints are configured using IP.   I thought the SFTP server could map to the file share.

    Additional questions:

With Azure Data Factory is there a way to SFTP to this service (SSIS)?

Does azure support SFTP sending traffic to the Blob to be eventually uploaded into Data Factory?

Can SFTP traffic can directly feed into Factory Data Factory (no Blob involved)?

Should flat files be stored in a Blob or a Azure file share?
